How IALA Started

The Iowa Assisted Living Association was formed to provide a focus for the promotion of assisted living residences within the State. IALA is dedicated to advancing the ideals of privacy, independence, dignity and choice for our frail elderly while maintaining a safe and secure environment for them.

The Iowa Assisted Living Association (IALA) is a member of the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA).

ALFA is the largest national association exclusively dedicated to professionally-managed, resident-centered senior living communities and the seniors and families they serve. Since 1990, ALFA has advocated for choice, accessibility, independence, dignity, and quality of life for all seniors. ALFA’s programs promote business and operational excellence through education, research, publications, professional networking and online tools designed to foster innovation and entrepreneurism in the field of senior living.

Doing things we enjoy gives us pleasure and adds meaning to our lives. People with AD need to be active and do things they enjoy. However, don’t expect too much. It’s not easy for them to plan their days and do different tasks.

Here are two reasons:

  • They may have trouble deciding what to do each day. This could make them fearful and worried or quiet and withdrawn.
  • They may have trouble starting tasks. Remember, the person is not being lazy. He or she might need help organizing the day or doing an activity.
